Mark Thomas’ income will be affected due to his hospitalization and the fact that he has been unable to be optimally productive in the past couple of weeks. We all know that the recession has hit us hard – and I know you will understand that photographers all over are suffering. Mark was diagnosed with a form of cancer that appears to still have the doctors baffled.

As most of you know – Mark and Elsa Hoffmann have been partners in business for the past – almost- 4 years. Mark has worked with many of you also – Pieter and Mark also run workshops together. Mark has put an immense amount of time into the forums and photographic communities of South Africa – and spent many hours helping others. The fund will be administered by Elsa Hoffmann.

I you can find it in your heart, and are willing or able to contribute, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Please know that words can never thank you enough. If you are unable to contribute – keep sending the positive energy. I thank you for that too.

You are welcome to visit our website for information about our business if you want to make sure its legit.
The account will be exclusively for Mark and not form part of our joint business. Any questions you have will be answered.

The digital living room, with a PC as the centerpiece of the entertainment experience, continues to grow worldwide as more consumers create and consume content. Because consumers want a compact and easy-to-use solution to enjoy their multimedia, Lenovo designed two new product lines – the Q and D Series – to fit this digital life, in style

Due to explosive growth of multimedia content combined with a greater selection of varying types of PCs, consumers now are considering size, versatility, performance and price more than ever before when selecting PCs for their homes. Lenovo’s Q Series offers a range of PC products to complement the home theater experience and simplify the living room or study

With more people creating and consuming content than ever before and home networks and high speed Internet adoption continuing to increase, home servers like the D400 are becoming important tools to manage content created on several different PCs and devices.

“Lenovo will be a great addition to the category of home servers powered by Windows Home Server software,” said Eugene Saburi, general manager, Microsoft Solutions Marketing. “With the IdeaCentre D400 home server coinciding with the availability of Windows 7 on Lenovo laptops and netbooks, consumers will have an affordable solution that enables them to unleash the power of their home networks.”
“We created our latest IdeaCentre PCs to help consumers manage their personal and professional content with the performance they need and with a style that expresses their individuality,” said Dion Weisler, vice president, Business Operations, Lenovo. “Our super small nettops give consumers the portability of a laptop, making them a versatile and affordable part of the digital home experience.”
“The Lenovo Q110 with NVIDIA ION delivers knockout graphics capabilities for its diminutive size,” said Manoj Gujral, general manager, Desktop GPU Business, NVIDIA. “With its ION graphics processor, this tiny PC can do more than many full-size desktops, letting users enjoy full HD movies, play mainstream games, edit family videos and even quickly convert video to an MP3 player.”

The IdeaCentre Q700 – Multimedia Powerhouse for the Home
Lenovo’s DVD-like IdeaCentre home theater PC connects with multiple devices, including digital cameras, smartphones and more so consumers can watch videos in full HD resolution, view photos and listen to music all on their TV. They can also watch and record digital TV with the optional TV tuner and remote while seamlessly integrating multiple media sources into a single device.

Key Features Include:

• Full High Definition: Supports 1920×1080 graphics and 7.1 digital surround sound
• Fast Intel Core™2 Duo Processors: Provides silent and smooth video playback
• Plenty of Storage: Stores up to 1 terabyte of content with eight USB ports and an eSATA port

Nikon Corporation today announced the winners of the Nikon Photo Contest International (NPCI) 2008-2009, including two Americans, Peter Allinson and Danny Ghitis. One of the world’s largest and most prestigious photo contests, the Nikon Photo Contest International, held since 1969 and staged every other year, provides an opportunity for photographers around the world to communicate and enrich photographic culture for professionals and amateurs alike. This year’s theme was also Nikon’s brand statement, “At the heart of the image.”

Peter G. Allinson, M.D, of Kingsville, MD, received first place in the “My Planet” category, for his work, entitled “Friends.” Entries in the “My Planet” category were judged by how well they expressed the photographer’s feelings about their world, whether that involved the environment, scenes from their daily life, or people and other subjects that stirred their passions. Allinson’s photograph raises environmental awareness not by elaborate explanations, but with its unstaged portrayal of nature. It exemplifies photography’s power to convey important messages regardless of generation.

The Nikon Photo Contest International also recognized Danny Ghitis, of Brooklyn, N.Y., (http://dannyghitis.com) as one of four “Emerging Talents.” This award is presented to photographers under the age of 30 whose photographs show a fresh perspective, demonstrate high-level expressive power and convey the energy of youth. The panel chose his work, “Ganges Bather,” for conveying emotive power, fresh subject matter and a youthful perspective that indicates great future potential as a photographer.

The Nikon Photo Contest International 2008-2009 contest received more than 51,000 photographs from 18,000 entrants representing 153 countries and regions. A total of 54 prize winners were selected from among the large number of entries by a panel of 10 international photography professionals. The judges from Nikon’s native Japan were: Mr. Yoshitaka Nakatani, Mr. Kazuyoshi Nomachi, Mr. Kazuyoshi Miyoshi, Ms. Masako Imaoka, Mr. Manabu Miyazaki, Mr. Takashi Yamaguchi, and Ms. Sayaka Ikemoto. An international panel of judges included: Ms. Ami Vitale from the U.S.A., Mr. Alptekin Baloglu from Turkey, and Ms. Claudia Hinterseer from the Netherlands. The full list of winners, along with their works, can be seen on the Nikon Photo Contest International website (http://www.nikon-npci.com/).

Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today announced six new PowerShot cameras offering diverse photographic options for users who have just begun their photographic journey or have been mastering their skills for many years. The new camera line-up delivers the unique features users want, with the superb image quality, ease-of-use and stylish design they have come to expect from Canon.

Whether a professional photographer looking for a smaller camera to tote along on assignment or a snap-happy sports fan heading to the big game, the new PowerShot digital cameras give users options for upgrading their shooting experience. All of the new cameras feature Optical Image Stabilization and use the DIGIC 4 Image Processor, the proprietary technology that accounts for the cameras’ higher performance levels, improved signal processing speeds and enhanced image quality. Smart AUTO technology can now track moving faces and 22 different shooting situations (up from 18 previously) by identifying the surroundings to help ensure proper lighting and focus, providing the confidence to deliver high-quality photos in virtually any situation, from group snapshots, to landscapes, to portraits and more.
Select new PowerShot models will have the ability to shoot 720p High-Definition (HD) video, utilize the PureColor System LCD and for the first time from Canon, a PowerShot Digital ELPH camera will have a touch screen user interface for easy navigation through images and menus.

The desire to capture a clear shot of a sunrise or sunset over a mountain range can be fulfilled by using powerful features such as the brand new 10.0-Megapixel High Sensitivity System found on two of the new higher-end PowerShot cameras, the PowerShot G11 and PowerShot S90. Proven to enhance image quality in low-light situations and reduce noise at high ISO speeds, the new High Sensitivity System which is combined with the DIGIC 4 image processor, results in a faster shutter speed to help reduce subject blur and camera shake in recorded images. When it’s not possible to use the flash at an event such as a wedding or a dance recital, this High Sensitivity System will help ensure images look great while making the user the envy of all in attendance.

“With the introduction of these new PowerShot cameras, consumers will have a wide array of choices when looking to upgrade and enhance their photography experience,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A. “Professional and entry-level users alike will now have the opportunity to choose the camera which best suits both their photographic and personal style at the same time.”

Mitchell Krog has just returned from a very successful photographic safari at the Sabi Sand wildlife reserve in the Greater Kruger National Park of Southern Africa. His stay was based at the stunning and luxurious Elephant Plains Game Lodge  resort which boasts some of the best game viewing, particularly predators, anywhere in South Africa (hands down).

Elephants Plains rangers are highly experienced at accommodating photographers, getting a photographer close to the action while ensuring that the animals are not caused any distress. Elephant Plains has been host to some of the top Wildlife Photographers in the world and remains to be a prized destination to get close to wild animals and have the opportunity to capture prize winning images of them. The trip was hosted by Wim van den Heever and Greg Du Toit from OutdoorPhoto.

Watch Mitchell’s Living Canvas web site for new images from the Sabi Sand’s which will be released shortly. A full article review of Mitchell’s trip will be posted on the blog shortly.
